M. Lacrosse. UNC Looks To Stretch Win Streak To Eight Friday

The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team (7-0, ACC 1-0) returns to action after its shortest break of the season between games when the Tar Heels play host to the Dartmouth Big Green (2-1, Ivy League 0-0) at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field Friday evening. Friday night will be Faculty/Staff/Family Night at Fetzer Field. General admission seats will be available on game night for $5 at the ticket windows in Carmichael Arena. UNC students, faculty and staff will be admitted free of charge by showing their UNC One Cards at the Fetzer Field gates. The Dartmouth game Friday will also be webcast live on TarHeelBlue.com free of charge.

The Carolina women are in 20th place after the first night of the 2010 Division-I Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships taking place in West Lafayette, Indiana. The 200-yard freestyle relay composed of Rebecca Kane, Katie Nolan, Layne Brodie and Sarah Tanner finished in 16th place overall Thursday night with a time of 1:31.54. The relay touched in a time of 1:30.44 in prelims.

The University of North Carolina baseball program announced the opening of the Carolina Baseball Hall of Honor Thursday. The Hall of Honor, which celebrates the rich history of North Carolina baseball, will open Friday, March 19 before Carolina's game against Florida State. The Carolina Baseball Hall of Honor will be open every game day as soon as the gates open until the game's first pitch.

University of North Carolina students are invited to compete in a 40-yard dash to determine the "Fastest Tar Heel On Campus" during Carolina's nationally televised ESPN Spring Football Game on Saturday, April 10 at 3 p.m. Six finalists (three male, three female) will race against some of the fastest Carolina varsity student-athletes at halftime of the Spring Game. Linebacker Zach Brown, who earlier this semester set the school record in the indoor 60-meter dash, is tentatively scheduled to represent the football team.

Carolina, an at-large selection, enters the tournament after an 88-66 win over North Carolina Central on Sunday. Gonzaga, an automatic qualifier out of the West Coast Conference, has won 18 straight games and is coming off a 76-48 win over Pepperdine in the WCC Tournament final on March 8.

Fifth-ranked Princeton overcame a five-goal second-half deficit against third-ranked North Carolina but Billy Bitter scored the go-ahead goal with exactly three minutes to play and the Tar Heels prevailed 12-11 in men's lacrosse action before a crowd of 2,812 at Fetzer Field Tuesday night. The win improves North Carolina to 7-0 overall as the Tar Heels are off to their best start since the 1993 campaign when they won nine in a row to start the season.

The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team dropped slightly in both national polls this week after last weekend's overtime loss at Virginia. Carolina (6-1) is ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll and fifth in the Inside Lacrosse media poll. The Tar Heels were ranked third in both polls last week before losing 13-12 in overtime at Virginia last Saturday.

Brian Goodwin's 3-for-3 and three RBI performance led No. 17 North Carolina over Princeton 25-1 Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. Goodwin walked four times to reach base seven different times - which is believed to be a North Carolina record. Garret Davis (2-1) earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits while matching a career-high with six strikeouts. The 25 runs scored and 22 hits are both the highest totals of the season. The 25 runs are the most since Carolina thrashed Davidson 28-3 March 28, 2007. Carolina improves to 13-4 overall as Princeton falls to 1-7 overall.

Men's lacrosse attackman Billy Bitter had a season-high four goals as fourth-ranked UNC defeated ninth-ranked Duke, 13-7, to earn Tar Heel of the Week honors for March 8-14, 2010. The win broke a 15-game ACC regular-season losing streak for UNC and it also broke an 11-game losing streak to Duke. The junior from Stowe, Vermont, scored two first half goals to stake the Tar Heels to a 5-3 lead at intermission. Then, after Duke had tied the game at 6-6 with four minutes left in the third quarter, UNC scored four straight goals in a span of 3:27 to take a 10-6 lead with one second left in the third period. Bitter assisted on the first and third goals of the scoring streak that put the game away while scoring the second and fourth goals of the same scoring run, both in an unassisted manner.

Sophie Grabinski and Shinann Featherston scored singles wins for Carolina, which lost for just the third time in 2010, with all three losses coming to top-10 opponents. Redshirt junior Chip Peterson, juniors Joe Kinderwater, Tyler Harris and Tommy Wyher, sophomores Steve Cebertowicz, Wil Singley, Evan Reed and Brad Hamilton and freshman Tom Luchsinger have all earned bids. Wyher has earned the Championships' No. 1 seed in the 100-yard butterfly.

Kirk Urso, a sophomore midfielder on the University of North Carolina men's soccer team, secured a spot on the 2009 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team as announced recently by Commissioner John Swofford.Urso started all 22 games in 2009 as the Tar Heel advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Lombard, Ill. native was tied for third on the team in scoring with 14 points. He scored four goals and led UNC in assists wth six. Overall the Tar Heels finished 16-2-4 in 2009.

Matt Harvey will take the mound as North Carolina's starting pitcher Friday night against Duke at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Not long ago, it would have made sense to Harvey that, at the age of 20, as part of his natural progression, he'd make a start in a Triple-A ballpark in early spring. But in his original plan, he wouldn't have been wearing a college uniform.

No. 11 North Carolina will open conference play this weekend traveling to Durham to play Duke beginning Friday. The Tar Heels (11-2, 0-0 ACC) and Blue Devils (9-3, 0-0 ACC) are slated to play at 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. One point towards the Carlyle Cup, the all-sports competition between Carolina and Duke, will go to the winner of the three-game set. The Tar Heels currently hold an 11-6.5 lead in the event, after a big 13-7 win in men's lacrosse.

No. 10 seed North Carolina will begin the ACC Tournament on Thursday with its lowest seed ever and its earliest start ever. The Tar Heels will face seventh-seeded Georgia Tech, which swept the season series with Carolina this year. Carolina leads the series, 60-22, but has a 4-4 record against the Yellow Jackets in the ACC Tournament. Carolina has an 84-38 ACC Tournament record and is 32-13 in Greensboro, winning eight ACC Tournaments there.

Sophomore attackman Thomas Wood scored a career-high five goals while adding an assist and junior attackman Billy Bitter had four goals and two assists to lead fourth-ranked North Carolina to a 13-7 win over 10th-ranked Duke in men's lacrosse action Wednesday before a crowd of 1,912 at Koskinen Stadium. The Tar Heel defense limited the Blue Devils to seven goals, the fewest the Blue Devils have scored against Carolina since March 20, 2002, and no Tar Heel opponent has scored more than seven against UNC's defense this season.

No. 4 North Carolina dropped just its second match of the season Wednesday when the Tar Heels fell to No. 5 Florida, 6-1, at the Ring Tennis Complex. Senior Sophie Grabinski got the lone point for UNC with her win over Joanna Mather at No. 5 singles, but Carolina was unable to rally after dropping a tight doubles point. The victory was Florida's 76th consecutive home win, and the Gators improved to 12-2 on the year, while the Tar Heels slipped to 13-2.

Right-handed pitcher Matt Harvey struck out 11 Michigan batters to spark a three-game Tar Heel sweep of the Wolverines and earn Progress Energey Tar Heel of the Week honors for March 1-7, 2010. Harvey, a junior from Mystic, Conn., was masterful in eight innings of work Friday, leading Carolina to a 4-2 victory. Harvey allowed no runs on three hits in eight innings of shut out ball. He earned his second win of the season and 16th of his career Friday. The junior struck out double-digit batters for the third time in his career. Harvey twice fanned the side Friday en route to his second dominating performance in as many weeks.

The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team (5-0, ACC 0-0) returns to action after just a four-day break this Wednesday when the Tar Heels travel the eight miles to Durham, N.C. to meet the Blue Devils of Duke (2-2, ACC 0-1) at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. It will be the first mid-week game this season for the Tar Heels and the game will mark the beginning of the 2010 ACC slate for UNC.This is the third of three successive nationally televised games for the Tar Heels. The game will be televised on ESPNU in HD with Carter Blackburn handling the play-by-play and Quint Kessenich doing the color commentary. UNC makes five appearances this season on ESPNU.

The game will be the first meeting between the teams at Catonsville since the 2005 season. This is the second of three successive televised games for the Tar Heels. The University of North Carolina gymnastics team continues its challenging schedule on Friday when the Tar Heels travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face No. 4 Florida and Ball State at 7 p.m. The meet is Carolina's third straight against a top-10 opponent. Carolina competed against Ball State last February in a five-team meet at Kentucky.
