The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team (7-0, ACC 1-0) returns to action after its shortest break of the season between games when the Tar Heels play host to the Dartmouth Big Green (2-1, Ivy League 0-0) at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field Friday evening. Friday night will be Faculty/Staff/Family Night at Fetzer Field. General admission seats will be available on game night for $5 at the ticket windows in Carmichael Arena. UNC students, faculty and staff will be admitted free of charge by showing their UNC One Cards at the Fetzer Field gates. The Dartmouth game Friday will also be webcast live on TarHeelBlue.com free of charge.

The University of North Carolina track and field program will kick-off its outdoor schedule with the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Friday and Saturday.

The Carolina women are in 20th place after the first night of the 2010 Division-I Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships taking place in West Lafayette, Indiana. The 200-yard freestyle relay composed of Rebecca Kane, Katie Nolan, Layne Brodie and Sarah Tanner finished in 16th place overall Thursday night with a time of 1:31.54. The relay touched in a time of 1:30.44 in prelims.

The University of North Carolina baseball program announced the opening of the Carolina Baseball Hall of Honor Thursday. The Hall of Honor, which celebrates the rich history of North Carolina baseball, will open Friday, March 19 before Carolina's game against Florida State. The Carolina Baseball Hall of Honor will be open every game day as soon as the gates open until the game's first pitch.

University of North Carolina students are invited to compete in a 40-yard dash to determine the "Fastest Tar Heel On Campus" during Carolina's nationally televised ESPN Spring Football Game on Saturday, April 10 at 3 p.m. Six finalists (three male, three female) will race against some of the fastest Carolina varsity student-athletes at halftime of the Spring Game. Linebacker Zach Brown, who earlier this semester set the school record in the indoor 60-meter dash, is tentatively scheduled to represent the football team.

North Carolina (19-11) will make its ninth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament when the 10th-seeded Tar Heels face seventh-seeded Gonzaga Saturday at approximately 7:30 p.m. PDT at the University of Washington's Bank of America Arena. Carolina, an at-large selection, enters the tournament after an 88-66 win over North Carolina Central on Sunday. Gonzaga, an automatic qualifier out of the West Coast Conference, has won 18 straight games and is coming off a 76-48 win over Pepperdine in the WCC Tournament final on March 8.

After narrowly falling to EAGL rival Maryland on Valentine's Day in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels edged Maryland and George Washington University to win Tuesday night's tri-meet in College Park, Md. Senior Christine Nguyen won the all-around title and two event titles to lead Carolina in the win.

Dexter Strickland hit the go-ahead free throws with 2:34 left and North Carolina held William & Mary scoreless for the final 5 minutes in the Tar Heels' 80-72 win in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

Fifth-ranked Princeton overcame a five-goal second-half deficit against third-ranked North Carolina but Billy Bitter scored the go-ahead goal with exactly three minutes to play and the Tar Heels prevailed 12-11 in men's lacrosse action before a crowd of 2,812 at Fetzer Field Tuesday night. The win improves North Carolina to 7-0 overall as the Tar Heels are off to their best start since the 1993 campaign when they won nine in a row to start the season.

The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team dropped slightly in both national polls this week after last weekend's overtime loss at Virginia. Carolina (6-1) is ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll and fifth in the Inside Lacrosse media poll. The Tar Heels were ranked third in both polls last week before losing 13-12 in overtime at Virginia last Saturday.

Brian Goodwin's 3-for-3 and three RBI performance led No. 17 North Carolina over Princeton 25-1 Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. Goodwin walked four times to reach base seven different times - which is believed to be a North Carolina record. Garret Davis (2-1) earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits while matching a career-high with six strikeouts. The 25 runs scored and 22 hits are both the highest totals of the season. The 25 runs are the most since Carolina thrashed Davidson 28-3 March 28, 2007. Carolina improves to 13-4 overall as Princeton falls to 1-7 overall.

Men's lacrosse attackman Billy Bitter had a season-high four goals as fourth-ranked UNC defeated ninth-ranked Duke, 13-7, to earn Tar Heel of the Week honors for March 8-14, 2010. The win broke a 15-game ACC regular-season losing streak for UNC and it also broke an 11-game losing streak to Duke. The junior from Stowe, Vermont, scored two first half goals to stake the Tar Heels to a 5-3 lead at intermission. Then, after Duke had tied the game at 6-6 with four minutes left in the third quarter, UNC scored four straight goals in a span of 3:27 to take a 10-6 lead with one second left in the third period. Bitter assisted on the first and third goals of the scoring streak that put the game away while scoring the second and fourth goals of the same scoring run, both in an unassisted manner.

The University of North Carolina volleyball team announced the addition of Kaitlyn Anderson to the class of 2014. Anderson joins three other members of the 2010 recruiting class - Kayla Berringer of El Dorado Hills, Calif., Chaniel Nelson of Huntersville, N.C. and Amy Parlier of Boulder, Colo.

North Carolina will open its sixth appearance in the NIT in Carmichael Arena against William and Mary on Tuesday night. The Tar Heels are the No. 4 seed and William and Mary is the No. 5 seed. The Tribe is coached by former Tar Heel Tony Shaver. This is Roy Williams' first appearance in the NIT but overall, Carolina is 9-4 in the event, including winning the title in 1971. Carolina leads the all-time series with William and Mary, 17-3.

North Carolina won the first four team points decided to beat N.C. State 6-1 in a top-40 matchup Monday afternoon. The Tar Heels improve to 10-2 overall with the ACC season-opening win.

The University of North Carolina women's basketball team was awarded an at-large bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament and will open play against West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga on Saturday, March 20, in Seattle, Wash. UNC, which enters the tournament with a record of 19-11, is the No. 10 seed in the Sacramento Regional, while the Bulldogs (27-4) are the No. 7 seed.

The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team (6-0, ACC 1-0) returns to action after a six-day break this Tuesday when the third-ranked Tar Heels play host to the fifth-ranked Princeton Tigers (4-0, Ivy League 0-0) at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field in a battle of unbeaten teams. It will be the second straight mid-week game for the Tar Heels. This marks the only week this season when the Tar Heels will play two games in the same week. Carolina also plays host to Dartmouth Friday at 7 p.m. Both the Princeton game Tuesday and the Dartmouth game Friday will be webcast live on TarHeelBlue.com.

North Carolina junior attackman Billy Bitter was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, March 14. Bitter posted a season-high four goals as fourth-ranked UNC defeated ninth-ranked and preseason No. 1 Duke, 13-7 on the road.

Kayla Berringer, class of 2014, was named to Volleyball Magazine's "Fab 50" list of recruits for 2010. The 6'1" outside hitter from El Dorado Hills, Calif., was her team's captain at Oak Ridge High School and is a three-time all-league honoree and career record holder for kills at Oak Ridge.

Carolina has made consecutive bowl trips for the first time since the late 1990s and will look to continue that streak when they start the season vs. LSU in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta. Eleven Tar Heels were among the 94 East Atlantic Gymnastics League gymnasts named to the EAGL All-Academic team, the league announced Monday. Seniors Teri Diamond, Tina Jacob and Kara Wright were named to the team for the fourth consecutive year.

The University of North Carolina men's basketball team will play host to William and Mary on Tuesday, March 16, at 9:30 p.m. in Carmichael Arena in the opening round of the 2010 National Invitation Tournament.

Tar Heel Jack Fields, who held the individual lead after the first two rounds, slipped to a tie for third place, finishing just one stroke out of first place.

Chay Shegog tied a career high with 17 points to lead five Tar Heels in double figures as North Carolina closed its home schedule with an 88-66 win over North Carolina Central Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. Laura Broomfield added 12 points and 14 rebounds for UNC, which will now await its postseason fate after finishing the regular season with a 19-11 record that included wins over top-25 clubs Duke and St. John's and a total of 10 wins over the RPI top 100.

Greg Holt (0-1) suffers the loss for Carolina, who falls to 12-4 overall and 1-2 in ACC play. The Blue Devils Ben Grisz (1-1) earned the victory as Duke improves to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in ACC play. Duke grabs one point in the Carlyle Cup, the all-sports competition between the two schools, that Carolina now leads 11-7.5.

North Carolina senior Mateo Sossah earned a personal best, shattered the school record he set at the ACC Indoor Championships and broke the French national record for athletes 23 and under with his second-place finish of 5,886 at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships which concluded Saturday.

Carolina's Jack Fields fired an even par 71 in the second round of the Seminole Intercollegiate to hold on to the individual lead. Fields stands at five-under 137 and holds a four-stroke lead going into Sunday's final round. The Tar Heel team fired an 11-over-par 295 in the second round and stands in third place with a 580 total.

No. 4 North Carolina won the doubles point but could not hang on in singles as the Tar Heels lost to No. 9 Baylor, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Tennis Center. Sophie Grabinski and Shinann Featherston scored singles wins for Carolina, which lost for just the third time in 2010, with all three losses coming to top-10 opponents. The two teams were facing off for the second time this season, a month to the day after UNC topped Baylor, 5-2, in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis.

Despite a University of North Carolina gymnast placing first on every apparatus, West Virginia narrowly edged the Tar Heels 193.775-193.000 at Carmichael Arena Saturday afternoon in a battle of conference rivals. Carolina posted a season-high score on vault and senior Christine Nguyen won the three individual events, but the Tar Heels' poor performance on balance beam was costly.

North Carolina (18-11) plays its final regular season game of the year Sunday when the Tar Heels welcome area foe North Carolina Central to Carmichael Arena for a 3:30 p.m. matchup. The University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving program will send nine swimmers to the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming & Diving Championships scheduled for March 25-27 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Redshirt junior Chip Peterson, juniors Joe Kinderwater, Tyler Harris and Tommy Wyher, sophomores Steve Cebertowicz, Wil Singley, Evan Reed and Brad Hamilton and freshman Tom Luchsinger have all earned bids. Wyher has earned the Championships' No. 1 seed in the 100-yard butterfly.

Kirk Urso, a sophomore midfielder on the University of North Carolina men's soccer team, secured a spot on the 2009 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team as announced recently by Commissioner John Swofford.Urso started all 22 games in 2009 as the Tar Heel advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Lombard, Ill. native was tied for third on the team in scoring with 14 points. He scored four goals and led UNC in assists wth six. Overall the Tar Heels finished 16-2-4 in 2009.

Matt Harvey will take the mound as North Carolina's starting pitcher Friday night against Duke at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Not long ago, it would have made sense to Harvey that, at the age of 20, as part of his natural progression, he'd make a start in a Triple-A ballpark in early spring. But in his original plan, he wouldn't have been wearing a college uniform.

No. 10 seed North Carolina will begin the ACC Tournament on Thursday with its lowest seed ever and its earliest start ever. The Tar Heels will face seventh-seeded Georgia Tech, which swept the season series with Carolina this year. Carolina leads the series, 60-22, but has a 4-4 record against the Yellow Jackets in the ACC Tournament. Carolina has an 84-38 ACC Tournament record and is 32-13 in Greensboro, winning eight ACC Tournaments there.

Sophomore attackman Thomas Wood scored a career-high five goals while adding an assist and junior attackman Billy Bitter had four goals and two assists to lead fourth-ranked North Carolina to a 13-7 win over 10th-ranked Duke in men's lacrosse action Wednesday before a crowd of 1,912 at Koskinen Stadium. The Tar Heel defense limited the Blue Devils to seven goals, the fewest the Blue Devils have scored against Carolina since March 20, 2002, and no Tar Heel opponent has scored more than seven against UNC's defense this season.

No. 4 North Carolina dropped just its second match of the season Wednesday when the Tar Heels fell to No. 5 Florida, 6-1, at the Ring Tennis Complex. Senior Sophie Grabinski got the lone point for UNC with her win over Joanna Mather at No. 5 singles, but Carolina was unable to rally after dropping a tight doubles point. The victory was Florida's 76th consecutive home win, and the Gators improved to 12-2 on the year, while the Tar Heels slipped to 13-2.

Right-hander Jimmy Messer earned his first victory of the season leading No. 11 North Carolina over St. John's 8-2 Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. Ben Bunting and Tommy Coyle paced the Tar Heels offensively with three hits and two RBI. Carolina improves to 11-2 overall, while St. John's fall to 7-3 on the season.

Frank McGuire was a vocal critic. Dean Smith, his former assistant, wasn't much of a fan, either, even after the event was moved from N.C. State's Reynolds Coliseum in 1967.

Right-handed pitcher Matt Harvey struck out 11 Michigan batters to spark a three-game Tar Heel sweep of the Wolverines and earn Progress Energey Tar Heel of the Week honors for March 1-7, 2010. Harvey, a junior from Mystic, Conn., was masterful in eight innings of work Friday, leading Carolina to a 4-2 victory. Harvey allowed no runs on three hits in eight innings of shut out ball. He earned his second win of the season and 16th of his career Friday. The junior struck out double-digit batters for the third time in his career. Harvey twice fanned the side Friday en route to his second dominating performance in as many weeks.

The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team has moved up to No. 3 in both national polls this week. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 4 last week by both the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and the Inside Lacrosse media poll, beat last week's third-ranked team, Penn, 11-6 last weekend in Chapel Hill.

The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team (5-0, ACC 0-0) returns to action after just a four-day break this Wednesday when the Tar Heels travel the eight miles to Durham, N.C. to meet the Blue Devils of Duke (2-2, ACC 0-1) at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. It will be the first mid-week game this season for the Tar Heels and the game will mark the beginning of the 2010 ACC slate for UNC.This is the third of three successive nationally televised games for the Tar Heels. The game will be televised on ESPNU in HD with Carter Blackburn handling the play-by-play and Quint Kessenich doing the color commentary. UNC makes five appearances this season on ESPNU.

Junior Colin Bates allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings of work to lead No. 12 North Carolina over Michigan 9-1 Sunday in front of 2209 fans at Boshamer Stadium. Bates improves to 3-0 on the season and is perfect in three career starts on the mound. Ben Bunting and Ryan Graepel each posted three hits and two RBI, as North Carolina improves to 10-1 on the year. Michigan falls to 4-7 after the three-game series sweep.

Kyle Singler scored 19 of his 25 points in the decisive first half and No. 4 Duke routed North Carolina 82-50 on Saturday night. Freshman John Henson matched a season high with 14 points for the Tar Heels (16-15, 5-11).

Freshman Chaz Frank went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored to lead No. 12 North Carolina over Michigan 7-6 Saturday in front of 1662 fans at Boshamer Stadium. The two teams combined for 24 hits and 26 runners left on base in the eventful game. Patrick Johnson (2-1) earned the victory allowing one run on six hits in six innings. Carolina improves to 8-1 and guarantees a series victory with the win, while Michigan falls to 4-6 on the year.

Senior midfielder Sean DeLaney's career-high five points led fourth-ranked North Carolina's offense and redshirt junior goalkeeper Chris Madalon matched his career high for saves with 13 to lead the defense as the Tar Heels defeated No. 18 UMBC 12-7 in men's lacrosse action before a crowd of 1,365 at UMBC Stadium. The Tar Heels remain unbeaten on the season at 5-0 heading into a nationally-televised game at Duke (2-2) Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium in Durham N.C.

Senior Vanneisha Ivy punched her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships with a personal-record performance inthe 60-meter hurdles. Ivy along with nine other individuals representing the University of North Carolina in the "last chance" Alex Wilson Invitational closed out the regular indoor season on Saturday.

Becky Lynch had three goals and an assist and Laura Zimmerman had a goal and two assists as the fourth-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team beat third-ranked Pennsylvania, 11-6 on Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels dominated the second half, outscoring the Quakers 5-1 and outshooting them 15-3 after halftime.

The 2009 North Carolina field hockey team gathered one last time Feb. 27 to remember a phenomenal season, recognize outstanding players and admire the new NCAA Championship rings.

North Carolina will close out the regular season at No. 4 Duke. Duke can clinch at least a share of the league regular-season title and No. 1 overall seed with a win while North Carolina can get either the No. 9 or No. 10 seed in the ACC Tournament. For the second week in a row, the University of North Carolina gymnastics team finished second to a top-10 opponent. The Tar Heels recorded their highest team total this season and Kara Wright tied her personal best in all-around, but the team could not keep pace with No. 4 Florida.

Junior Matt Harvey pitched eight shutout innings and struck out eleven batters to lead No. 12 North Carolina over Michigan 4-2 Friday at Boshamer Stadium. A spectacular double play in the top of the fourth followed by a two-run home run off the bat of Dillon Hazlett in the bottom of the frame, proved to be the lead Carolina would never relinquish. North Carolina improves to 8-1 on the year, while Michigan falls to 4-5.

Lynetta Kizer had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead ninth-seeded Maryland (19-11) to an 83-77 win over eighth-seeded North Carolina Thursday afternoon at the Greensboro Coliseum. Tianna Hawkins added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the defending champion, while Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 23 points to lead the Tar Heels.

The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team (4-0) returns to action after a nine-day break this Saturday when the Tar Heels travel to Catonsville, Md. to meet the Retrievers of UMBC (1-1) at 12 p.m. at UMBC Stadium. The game will be the first meeting between the teams at Catonsville since the 2005 season. This is the second of three successive televised games for the Tar Heels. The game will be televised live in the Baltimore area as the WMAR-TV Game of the Week and will be tape delayed on ESPNU. UNC's 11-4 win at Navy on February 25 was televised nationally on CBS College Sports Television and the Tar Heels' game at Duke on March 10 will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

No. 12 North Carolina (7-1) will play host to Michigan (4-4) this weekend for a three-game series. The two teams have met ten times in their stories histories, with the Wolverines holding a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series. The Tar Heels will look to inch closer to evening the all-time series against the Wolverines beginning Friday

No. 2 North Carolina opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 7-0 sweep of No. 42 NC State Thursday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC, which won its 12th straight regular season match against State, improves to 13-1 on the season, while the Wolfpack falls to 4-4. Katrina Tsang, Sanaz Marand, Jelena Durisic, Zoe De Bruycker and Shinann Featherston scored straight-set wins for the Tar Heels.

Senior Ryan Graepel ripped a bases loaded RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to propel No. 12 North Carolina over Gardner-Webb 6-5 Thursday at Boshamer Stadium. Nine different Tar Heels hit safely in the game as the Tar Heels pounded out 12 hits. North Carolina improves to 7-1 overall, as Gardner-Webb falls to 2-7 on the year.

Coming off of the ACC Indoor Championships, the North Carolina track and field programs will send several student-athletes to Southbend, Ind., for the Alex Wilson Invitational this weekend.

Seven University of North Carolina women swimmers have qualified for the 2010 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana scheduled for March 18-20. Juniors Katura Harvey and Rebecca Kane, sophomores Layne Brodie, Sarah Tanner and Laura Moriarty, and freshmen Carly Smith and Katie Nolan all qualified for the championship meet.

The North Carolina wrestling team will travel to Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C., to compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Saturday. The Tar Heels finished fourth in the conference during the regular season behind three nationally ranked squads and will look to improve on last season's fourth place finish at the ACC Championships.

Junior Krista Jasper competed in every event for the first time in her collegiate career at the George Washington Invitational where she placed third in all-around and third on floor exercise. The Birchrunville, Pa., native has also placed fourth on uneven bars three times this season. Jasper has fought an ankle injury this season, but she competes with grace and determination every day in practice and in competition.

It was a chance meeting, really, when Waltiea Rolle crossed paths with Frank Rutherford on a Nassau street corner four-and-a-half years ago.

University of North Carolina sophomore Tyler Zeller has earned his second consecutive selection to the 2010 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Basketball Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

The University of North Carolina gymnastics team continues its challenging schedule on Friday when the Tar Heels travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face No. 4 Florida and Ball State at 7 p.m. The meet is Carolina's third straight against a top-10 opponent. Carolina competed against Ball State last February in a five-team meet at Kentucky.
